چکیده

We consider the complexity of the equivalence and containment problems for regular expressions and context-free grammars, concentrating on the relationship between complexity and various language properties. Finiteness and boundedness of languages are shown to play important roles in the complexity of these problems. An encoding into grammars of Tur ing machine computations exponential in the size of the grammar is used to prove several exponential lower bounds. These lower bounds include exponential time for testing equivalence of grammars generating finite sets, and exponential space for testing equivalence of non-self-embedding grammars. Several problems which might be complex because of this encoding are shown to simplify for linear grammars. Other problems considered include grammatical covering and structural equivalence for right-linear, linear, and arbitrary grammars.

The Equivalence Problem for LL- and LR-Regular Grammars

Questions whether or not two grammars belonging to a family of grammars generate the same language have extensively been studied in the literature. These problems are called equivalence problems and if there exists an algorithm which for each pair of grammars of this family gives an answer to this question then the equivalence problem for this family of grammars is said to be decidable. Otherwi...

Complexity of Problems of Commutative Grammars

We consider commutative regular and context-free grammars, or, in other words, Parikh images of regular and context-free languages. By using linear algebra and a branching analog of the classic Euler theorem, we show that, under an assumption that the terminal alphabet is fixed, the membership problem for regular grammars (given v in binary and a regular commutative grammar G, does G generate v...

Signature submanifolds for some equivalence problems

This article concerned on the study of signature submanifolds for curves under Lie group actions SE(2), SA(2) and for surfaces under SE(3). Signature submanifold is a regular submanifold which its coordinate components are differential invariants of an associated manifold under Lie group action, and therefore signature submanifold is a key for solving equivalence problems.

A Proof of the Pumping Lemma for Context-Free Languages Through Pushdown Automata

The pumping lemma for context-free languages is a result about pushdown automata which is strikingly similar to the well-known pumping lemma for regular languages. However, though the lemma for regular languages is simply proved by using the pigeonhole principle on deterministic automata, the lemma for pushdown automata is proven through an equivalence with context-free languages and through th...

Complexity Results on Balanced Context-Free Languages

Some decision problems related to balanced context-free languages are important for their application to the static analysis of programs generating XML strings. One such problem is the balancedness problem which decides whether or not the language of a given contextfree grammar (CFG) over a paired alphabet is balanced. Another important problem is the validation problem which decides whether or...
